The ‘Brand’s Brain International Challenge 2013’ will be running at Siam Paragon’s Royal Paragon Hall from Thursday to Sunday.
Fill in the blanks: competitors from 23 countries are coming to Bangkok to pit their skills at crosswords and Sudoku this week.
They are not just coming to make up the numbers, but to gather for "Brand's Brain International Challenge 2013", which will take place at the Royal Paragon Hall of Siam Paragon from Thursday to Sunday.
Current world crossword game champion Nigel Richards from New Zealand, and current Sudoku world champion Jan Mrozowski from Poland are among those slated to compete in this year's event.
The world-class battle of wits includes the 28th "Brand's Crossword Game King's Cup", where players in the International Expert division will vie for a trophy from HM the King and prize money of US$10,000 (about 310,000 baht), and the 7th "Brand's International Sudoku Queen's Cup", in which a trophy donated by HM the Queen will be on offer with US$5,000 in prize money.
Top-ranked international competitors will be flying in from the US, England, Australia, Canada, China, India, Nigeria, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Ghana, Pakistan, Taiwan, South Korea, the Philippines, Poland, Scotland, the UAE, Austria, Greece and Laos.
Many Thai players will also be competing, including world champions Panupol Sujjayakorn and Pakorn Nemitmansuk, and highly-ranked Sudoku players Sinchai Rungsangrattanakul and Porameth Yodamornsoontorn. Last year's Sudoku champion Yuhei Kusui from Japan will be returning to defend his title, while the defending crossword game champion Helen Gipson from Scotland again compete.
The crossword game tournament will consist of 29 rounds in four days (July 11-14) and the Sudoku tournament will consist of five rounds in two days (July 13-14). Up to 7,000 students at kindergarten, elementary, high school and university levels will also be competing in Crossword Game, A-Math, Kumkom, Sudoku, Crossword Puzzle, IQ Word Up, Gold Finger, Four Star and Pic and Pair tournaments. The event will be open to the public, and there will be a giant electronic "Crossword Transformer" board featuring demonstrations and live tournament coverage.
