Money talks

Dont be surprised the next time youre handed a 50-baht paper banknote as change. Its not counterfeit its legal tender and you can pay for anything you want with it. The new banknote will soon replace the glossy, light blue ones were all familiar with. Read the following story from the Bangkok Post and work with a friend to do the following exercises.

A bank official examines some of the features of the new 50-baht paper banknote under an ultraviolet light.

The Bank of Thailand will soon be issuing new paper 50-baht banknotes to replace the current notes, said Ithichai Chanthrindhu, senior director for the bank. The size and design of the paper banknotes will remain unchanged and will be easier to maintain than the polymer ones, whose colours tend to fade once folded. The central bank first introduced the polymer notes in 1996.

IN THE MONEY

Ithichai said the new paper notes will include special foil fibres as a fraud prevention measure. He noted that a recent trend has seen counterfeiters changing from 500-baht banknotes to 100 baht, due to the large amount in the market. The central bank is stepping up efforts to detect banknote fraud through co-operation with related agencies. Banknote fraud is especially common in provinces along the countrys borders, Ithichai said.
