DJ Kobs DIY postcards are picture perfect

Finding just the right postcard to send to that special person is never an easy task. But for Nawaporn Taothong (DJ Kob), postcards are nothing but fun fun to send, fun to receive and especially fun to make.

She made her first photo postcard when she was a university student, and since then the 27-year-old DJ has sent out hundreds of handmade postcards to her loved ones.

• Did you know •
DJ Kobs first award-winning photo was an image of one of the giants inside the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

I made my first postcard with the intention of just showing my friends how good I was at taking photos, she said with a laugh. But now its more like my hobby.

When it comes to special occasions, the Virgin Hitz DJ prefers sending postcards to her friends rather than just ringing them up.

For me, calling somebody to say happy birthday is too ordinary, she said. The words are gone like the air. But if its a meaningful postcard, it can make somebodys day.

DIY CARDS

DJ Kob has never sent ready-made postcards the kind sold at tourist shops to her family or her friends.

I dont like traditional postcards, she said. Theyre not unique. But handmade postcards make people feel special.

DJ Kob said that making lovely, personalised postcards is easy. All you need is a photograph, a piece of card stock, adhesive, a stamp, and a pen to express a witty or heartfelt message.

Just glue the card to the back of the photo, she said. Write down your colourful message and the address of the person youre sending it to and slap a stamp on it. Bingo! Your job is done.

To get the highest-quality cards possible, DJ Kob suggested using photos with a matte finish.

Its better to use matte-coated photos, she said. Glossy ones arent good because youll leave fingerprints when you touch them.

If youre busy or you dont like to send postcards through the traditional postal system, DJ Kob suggested sending your personalised postcards by email. This method requires some knowledge of graphics software for manipulating images and text, however.

Scan your image and use Photoshop, Illustrator or PageMaker to embellish the image, she said. Type in a fun message and save it in the JPEG file format. Then, email it to your friend.

MAKE IT MEANINGFUL

To make the best postcards, its better to use a photo thats meaningful to you and your recipient. A beautiful image is less important, DJ Kob Said.

During the last Chinese New Year, I saw a pigs head at a shrine, she said. That reminded me of a close friend of mine who is overweight. I took a picture of that pigs head and made her a postcard with an annoying message.

BE A CARRIER

DJ Kob said that the best way to get great photos is to carry a camera with you wherever you go. Theres no way of predicting when a great shot will present itself.

Things worth photographing occur for just a few minutes or a just a few seconds, she said. I always carry a camera with me so that I wont miss good shots.

Its not necessary to use a top-notch camera to get fine photos, either. DJ Kob said that good photos depend on many things, including light, mood and composition.

Normal digital cameras will work, she said. Consider your budget. Its useless to have a fancy camera if you dont know how to use it.
