Letter of the week

BUSY WEEKENDS

Ive been reading Student Weekly for a couple of years now. I like reading it because it helps me to learn English.

Many students dont have much time to relax because every weekend they study and take lessons in subjects like Thai, English, math, science, music and sports.

Having lessons on weekends can be an advantage because you will gain lots of knowledge. But they can also be a disadvantage because you may not have time to relax or do your homework.

It all depends on how you use your time. If you use your time wisely, then youll have more time to spare. If not, then you will not have any time to do what you want.

But If youre always free, then its better to have weekend lessons rather than wasting your time.

Danaya Wattanadilokkul, Nonthaburi

Thanks for your words of wisdom, Danaya. Youre right when you point out that budgeting your time is very important. As Ive said before, making sure that you have enough time for both work and relaxation is vital for a balanced and healthy life. Thanks for backing me up on that. Editor

SOUTH PACIFIC

My name is Pure. Im preparing my English skills because next year I have to go to New Zealand for my secondary studies.

My problem is that I dont think my English skills are very good. Im worried that Ill have a lot of problems with the language when I go there. My older sister studied in New Zealand, so I asked her advice about how to develop my English skills. She said that I need to try, try and try, but I dont understand that advice.

Do you have any ideas about how I can improve my English?

Nithikorn Bunyamanee, Songkhla

Thats a good question, Pure. You didnt tell me what youre already doing to improve your English, so Ill give you a few of the same pointers that I give to everybody who asks for my advice on the subject. Spend as much time as you can listening to English. Read as much as you can, including this magazine. Stand in front of a mirror and watch and listen to yourself as you practise pronunciation. Just expose yourself to as much English as you can every day. Your sisters advice is also good, by the way. Also keep in mind that youll soon be immersed in an English-speaking environment your language skills will improve because youll be forced to use them every minute youre awake. Good luck. Editor

LOVE STORY

My name is Tukta. What do you think about love?

People think about love in different ways, and most think that its wonderful. I think that love is about two people who trust and understand each other. Most people try to do their best because love is necessary for them.

I hope that everyone will have love because it will give them happy days and sweet dreams.

Chutima Kittipanyasiri, Udon Thani

Thanks for your views on love, Tukta. Love can, indeed, be lovely, but it can also be difficult and heartbreaking at times. In the immortal words of cartoonist Lynda Barry: Love is an exploding cigar we willingly smoke. Wise words, indeed. Editor

WHERE THERES SMOKE

My nickname is Phet. I like to read Student Weekly because it has good and sometimes funny information.

I would like to tell you about my father. I think that my father is a good role model because he doesnt like smoking.

He told me that smoking is a bad habit. Smoking may cause cancer and other harmful diseases. It destroys the brains cells, and the smoke from a cigarette can disturb other people.

I think that its also expensive and wasteful.

Phetsurat Juntree, Songkhla

Your dad sounds like a great guy and a good role model, Phet. Hes right to point out that smoking is a serious risk to your health in many ways. There really isnt anything good about smoking, and there is absolutely no reason to do it. Editor
