Letter of the week

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY

There was a ceremony organised at my school. They were casting a statue of Buddha. Monks came and prayed with beautiful chant that I’d never heard before. They also made holy threads and holy water.

When the gold was melted and boiled at a high temperature, it splashed out some gold flakes, so after the ritual I got some bits of gold and brought them home to worship.

What do you think about this interesting ritual organised once in a blue moon? I felt lucky because it is something I will remember all my life. I was glad to participate in a beautiful old traditional Thai ceremony.

Phakwan Prueksakot,
Udon Thani

That sounds like a really interesting ceremony, Phakwan. It’s great to experience something that rarely happens, especially when you find it moving enough to give you a nice memory for the rest of your life. It’s also nice to hear that school can offer the occasional out of the ordinary experience. Thanks for writing in and telling us about it. — Deputy Editor

FURRY FRIEND

I want to have a pet. Perhaps I will get a cat. I think that would be good because having something to look after makes us become more responsible. It also makes us feel loved and not alone. Whenever I’m lonely, I can talk to my cat as if it was a friend. If I don’t want to talk to a real person about any issues that I feel uncomfortable with, I can talk to my cat instead.

Teera Siribunsuk,
Bangkok

There are lots of benefits to having a pet, Teera, especially a cat or a dog, both of which can be great company despite their limited vocabulary. I’m particularly fond of cats myself. Keep in mind that with owning a pet comes a big responsibility. Be sure to send us a picture of your cute cat if you get one! — Deputy Editor

COMPUTER TUTOR

Nowadays most students study extra classes in order to be able to pass an entrance exam or to get good marks in class. Some say that it is not necessary but I think it is.

Some students study extra classes because the teachers at school cannot make them understand the lessons. But if we do not pay attention during the extra class, we still won’t understand. There are also some students who just take extra classes because their friends do. They will never know how much their parents have to pay unless they have kids themselves.

There are many well-known tutors in Bangkok who have branches in other parts of Thailand, but they teach via a computer. I think it is a comfortable way to study, and the time is not fixed.

Anyway, I think that students should never sleep or play with their telephone during class so that they can pay attention to the teacher and learn their lessons effectively.

Pitchayawan Intharajak,
Udon Thani

Thanks for offering some good advice about paying attention in class, Pitchayawan. If you have to take extra classes, having lessons via a computer sounds like an interesting way to do it, especially if you can take the lessons in your own time. Just make sure that you leave enough time for rest and relaxation as well. Keep up the good work! — Deputy Editor
