Determined mind

This week�s university tips features a story about one young student�s determination to get into university. She succeeded without spending a fortune on tutors and special classes.

HARD ROAD TO EDUCATION

Piyaporn Khong-eusirikul comes from a poor family and had no chance to attend special tutoring schools like her friends did. Despite this, the 18-year-old Matayom 6 student at Sirirattanathorn School in Bangkok was successful in earning seats at two popular public universities this year through the direct admission system.

Piyaporn thrilled her family and friends with her exam results, which were good enough to win her seats at Silpakorn University�s engineering faculty and King Mongkut�s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITS) architecture faculty.

She dreams of one day becoming an architect.

Piyaporn said that the Silpakorn engineering faculty limited applications for its 20 available seats to the 10 students with the highest grade point averages from each school. She earned a 3.89 GPA, which ranked third in her class. In the end, there were 70 applicants vying for the 20 seats.

A total of 300 applicants applied at the KMITS architecture faculty, which later was shortlisted to 120. Of those 120 students, only 30 were selected.

�What I did was go to bed late after reading books and reviewing lessons. It wasn�t unusual for me to stay up until 1 am,� Piyaporn said. �I always took reading material with me and read whenever I had free time in between selling.�
