City Hall on October 25 uses pickup trucks to publicise the Futsal World Cup 2012 scheduled for November 1 to 18. The launch of the campaign took place at Bangkok Futsal Arena stadium in Nong Chok district of Bangkok.

Costly repairs under way

The air force has spent about 6.8 billion baht repairing its Don Mueang base and headquarters, which were damaged by last year’s floods. However, it will be almost another year before the repairs are completed, officials said.

Air force chief ACM Prajin Jantong said repairs to the flood-damaged facilities were now 87 percent finished. Nine aircraft damaged by the floods have been repaired and can resume normal operations, he said on October 28.

The work at the air force compound is expected to be completed by September 2013.

Police seize drugs

Border patrol police seized 100 kilogrammes of marijuana with an estimated value of more than 2 million baht.

One hundred packets of dried cannabis were confiscated on October 28 as the drugs were being smuggled across the border from Laos to a transit point in Ban Tha Dok Kaew, Tha Uthen district, police said. The smugglers managed to escape.

Border patrol unit head Thawee Sarakarn said drug smuggling gangs often take advantage of the annual festival marking the end of Buddhist Lent.

Man arrested with tigers

A 52-year-old Thai man was arrested on October 26. Police found 16 tiger cubs in his pickup truck. It happened in Khon Kaen province. The man told police he was paid 15,000 baht to transport the tigers from Bangkok. — AFP
