Tour guides rally over foreign rivals

A northern tour guide network on June 26 protest in Chiang Rai against a government policy which allows foreigners to legally register as tour guides in the country.

Around 30 Thai tour guides led by Natthaphatchamon Sriphitaksakon, president of the Chiang Rai Tour Guide Association, demanded that the Tourism and Sports Ministry cancel the policy.

The group later marched to Chiang Rai City Hall to submit a petition with Pranpriya Polyiam, acting head of the local Tourism and Sports office.

Authorities plan to reduce class sizes

The Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) will start its plan to reduce class sizes in both primary and secondary schools next term, officials said on June 28.

OBEC secretary-general Kamol Rodklai said the idea is that with fewer students to teach, teachers can coax a better performance from them. Kamol said OBEC wants to scale down the maximum number of students per classroom from 50 at present to 40 for secondary schools and to 30 for kindergartens and primary schools.

New tunnel

Tunnel to improve traffic flow

City Hall plans to build a four-lane tunnel on Si Ayutthaya Road in Bangkok. Authorities reported the news on June 25. The tunnel is expected to ease traffic jams along the road. It is due to be completed in three years.
