Letter of the week

AWESOME INTERNET

We all know that there are many things that a computer can do, like playing games. But everybody uses computers to get on the Internet.

Most people seem to think that the Internet is awesome, but some people don't. I think it's great because you can learn many new things. You can help other people around the world and donate money to them.

Why would it be bad, then? Because there are some things on the Internet that are not good for kids — like violence and pornography.

Also, using the Internet for too long a time is not good for your health. I used to spend a lot of time on the Internet, and it was awful. I got sick.

You must learn how to use the Internet in the right way. If you do, it will be great.

Charun Kummoon,
Udon Thani

You've laid it out pretty succinctly there, Charun. As with any tool, the Internet can be used or misused. You've got to find a proper balance with your online time and remember to have some stimulating activities that don't involve sitting in front of a screen. That being said, there's no denying that computers and the Internet have revolutionised the way that we live our lives — for good and for bad. — Editor

SPACED OUT

I read online recently that the Indian Space Agency has sent a probe to Mars. It is in orbit of the planet and is now sending back pictures.

I think that it's very interesting that a country like India could send a space probe to another planet. There are very few countries that are capable of sending spacecraft to explore the universe. Right now, there is also a probe from the European Space Agency that is investigating a comet.

I think that space travel is very interesting. I hope that human beings will continue to explore space.

Sittichai Aumphiphat,
Bangkok

There's a lot of exciting stuff happening in space right now, Sittichai. From the rovers and probes around Mars, Jupiter and Saturn to the mission to the comet to the probe that will be studying Pluto next year, there's plenty of news coming that will make space fans like you and me happy for quite a while. I, like you, hope that there's a lot more to come in the years ahead. — Editor

LIT LESSONS

In literature, I am studying the novel Fasting Feasting. One of my favourite quotes of the book is "Healthy mind. Healthy body."

When I was little, I was often told that exercise is the most important thing to do in my free time because most kids spend their time on leisure activities like drawing or playing with toy cars. Personally, I think there is a difference between generations that causes some disagreement within some families about being physically versus mentally healthy.

I think these little nonsense things that kids do can bring them happiness. The mind is already a medicine for the body to develop and grow. I may seem too psychological but hope you get my point.

Teera Siribunsuk,
Bangkok

There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing things that make us happy, Teera. As long as we balance the fun stuff with the stuff that we must do, we can lead a healthy happy life. You're right to point out that how we think has a big impact on how we feel physically. A happy, healthy mind leads, directly and indirectly, to a healthy body. — Editor
