Rock hardChai picks his favourites By Tatat Bunnag Anyone who went to the recent Fat Festival will be familiar with the dazzling live performances by rockers Brand New Sunset. Theyve emerged from the underground scene to become one of the most sought-after hard rock bands in the kingdom. Brand New Sunset stand out from the crowd with their unique blend of metal mayhem and melodic pop-punk. Songs from their second album, Realistic, have been played a lot on radio and cable TV, and the band has recently gone inter with gigs in Singapore and the Philippines. Brand New Sunsets 26-year-old guitarist and songwriter Suchai Chucherd (Chai) recently told Student Weekly that the bands third album is well on the way. In the meantime, we asked Chai to tell us about some of his favourite rock records. Guns N Roses This record definitely comes to mind when Im asked to list my top five albums. Appetite for Destruction was one of the first records I bought when I was a kid, and I still listen to it today. Back then, there wasnt a lot of music media in Thailand to keep us up-to-date with the latest stuff. There were no decent music magazines or cable TV channels. Most people would buy new albums by judging them from their cover artwork. I bought Appetite for Destruction for that reason, and I completely fell in love with it. AC/DC Playing the guitar has always been my passion, and thats partly why I got into AC/DCs music. Angus Young is definitely one of my favourite guitar heroes. His energetic guitar style has been an influence on many hard rock guitarists, including myself. Back in Black is one of hard rocks greatest achievements. The album before, Highway to Hell, was also great, but Back in Black is without a doubt their best. Anyone who loves playing rock guitar should give this record a try. If I had to pick one album that sums up rock music, this would be it. Metallica Im pretty sure that this album would be on many peoples list of all-time favourites. I love most of Metallicas albums, but Master of Puppets is definitely their finest moment. Its their last studio album with bassist Cliff Burton. He helped the band develop an original sound, moving on from the thrash metal of the first two records. I remember it sounding very brutal the first time I heard it. They were heavier than anything Id heard back in those days. It has killer riffs and great lyrics throughout. So good! The Allman The Allman Brothers Band were an American Southern-rock band from Georgia. At Fillmore East was their first live album, which was released in 1971. Its one of the top-selling albums in the bands catalogue and one of the highlights of their career. The magic of early 70s rock is captured here. You get blues, rock and jazz in a spectacular collection of long jams from the band. Lead guitarist Duane Allman was legendary for his slide guitar work. Unfortunately he was killed in a motorcycle accident not long after this album hit big. At Fillmore East may well be the best live recording in the history of rock music. The Eastbound
Downers Ive never really listened to much Thai music, but the Eastbound Downers are an exception. This is their last album, which was released on Panda Records a few months before the band split up. Its the only Thai rock album that I listen to often. Their music was something really new for the indie scene a few years ago. No other band really sounds like them. Unfortunately, some of the members of Eastbound Downers moved to New York for business reasons, so that was the end of them. I wish they were still together. They helped to enhance Bangkoks music scene a lot.
