Weekend popSaturday Seiko are worth the wait By Tatat Bunnag After the release of their Ramayana-inspired album Goodnight Friday back in 2005, Saturday Seiko started to fade from the music scene. The pop world moves fast in Thailand, and even though its only been two years, younger listeners may not be familiar with the band. Despite Saturday Seikos hiatus, singer Walailuck Musickpodoke (Koy) remained a regular fixture on TV and in magazines. With her distinctive good looks, eye-catching tattoos, striking eyeliner and quirky clothes, Koy is well known as a fashion trendsetter. When the band was enjoying its early success, Koy was the obvious focal point. She garnered even more media attention when she started dating Anusorn Maneethed (Yong) from indie pop group Armchair. With so much focus on Koys appearance, the bands musicianship has sometimes been overlooked. The group faced some hard times when their major-label deal expired, and they had to sign with a much smaller label. The band also went through some changes in their line-up. Despite these difficulties, Saturday Seikos third effort, Super Sunday, is their strongest album yet. Student Weekly recently caught up with Koy and her bandmates bassist Sutust Petchmee (Tust) and guitarists Jakraphan Boonlor (Tookkae) and Torsak Panjasuparak (Tor) at the launch party for their new album. >> Student Weekly: What is Super Sunday? << Koy: Were called Saturday Seiko, and the next day is Sunday, so its a Super Sunday. This album represents so many changes for us. We have new members, a new label and a new sound. << Tust: Were more like a guitar band now, and most of the songs are strong, melodic rock. >> Student Weekly: How did you find your new band members? << Koy: By auditioning. We were impressed by both Tookkae and Tors playing skills and by their musical vision. But during the audition, instead of playing guitar, Tor performed a stand-up comedy routine! [Laughs.] << Tor: I used to be in a comedy group at university. We did a pretty good job we even managed to get on TV. << Koy: Hes a funny guy, so I thought our band would be much better if he joined. >> Student Weekly: Koy, Saturday Seikos songs are pretty much rock n roll. Are you a big fan of rock? << Koy: Yes, but not all of it. Our music comes from each member of the band sharing their musical influences and creating a new sound. I also love jazz and acoustic music. >> Student Weekly: Is it true that you guys nearly broke up before the release of Super Sunday? << Koy: Oh yes. << Tust: It took us years to recruit new members and develop our new sound. << Koy: We almost gave up at one point. Luckily we have so many fans that have supported us since our first album. They kept writing to ask if we were going to release a new album. That gave us a lot of encouragement. A lot of my lyrics on this record are about saying thanks to our fans. >> Student Weekly: Can you tell us about the video for your latest single, 157 BPM? << Koy: The video was shot at the Nightingale-Olympic Building, which is one of my favourite places. It was built around 1930, and its the oldest department store in Thailand. Its really close to my university, and I used to go shopping there after school. The building is so beautiful and classy, and theres a lot of cool stuff there that you wont find in modern shopping malls. >> Student Weekly: Koy, you often design your own outfits and accessories. Have you thought about starting your own brand? << Koy: Absolutely, Im actually planning it now. Its a project that I want to get off the ground in the near future. Fashion is the one thing that I love as much as music.
