Movies Cinema sqweezBy Tatat Bunnag Singha picks his favourite films Most Thai music fans will be familiar with 23-year-old indie prince Prachathip Musigaphong (Singha). Hes best known as the guitarist with pop duo Sqweez Animal, who blend catchy pop with tasty touches of funk, soul and rock. Last year there was talk around town that Sqweez Animal were next big thing, and now theyve achieved mainstream success with a bunch of singles hitting the No. 1 spot on many radio stations.
Singha is also well known for his good looks he has been featured in loads of newspapers and magazines. He was even voted one of Cleo magazines 50 most eligible bachelors of 2007. With all this fame and coverage, people might assume that Singha is also a movie star. But dont expect to see him on the big screen any time soon. Ive tried acting a few times, but I was way too shy once I got in front of the cameras, he said. I think Ill just stick to being a musician. Though cinema stardom isnt in the cards for Singha, hes still a big movie fan. Student Weekly asked the pop heartthrob to tell us about some of his favourite films. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)Im a big fan of comedies, but Life Aquatic is more than just a typical comedy. Its a beautiful looking film with loads of odd little CG effects and subtle visual jokes. Bill Murray and Owen Wilson give amazing performances. The soundtrack of the film is also wonderful, with unusual covers of David Bowie songs and some pounding, rocking tracks in the action scenes. This film puts a smile on your face after you watch it. Snatch (2000)This one is a dark, comic masterpiece. Its directed by Madonnas husband, Guy Ritchie, and its one of the best written movies Ive seen. Snatch is an action film about Englands criminal underworld very smart, stylish and twisted with brilliant touches of dark humour. Its filled with memorable characters, with top performances from everybody involved. I was amazed atBrad Pitts performance how he shed his usual persona to play the role of an Irish gypsy. You can barely understand a word he says! Eternal Sunshine of theSpotless Mind (2004)This is probably my favourite film. I love all of Michel Gondrys work. Hes the kind of director who can somehow make the impossible possible. Hes also made brilliant music videos for artists like The White Stripes, Beck and Daft Punk. Eternal Sunshine is a bizarre and wonderful movie. Its very strange, but also tender and romantic. Its a love story, but its also about a company that specialises in wiping troubling memories away forever. This film is about something that many people secretly wish for a chance to forget painful things. The Science of Sleep (2006)This is the Gondry film that came after Eternal Sunshine. Its a surreal tale of dreams, and its a film that I can really relate to. Ive always had trouble sleeping. Sometimes its difficult for me to separate dreams from reality like when you have a dream that has a really defined structure or that feels totally real. This movie is exactly like that. The Science of Sleep is a great romantic comedy with a sad, dreamy tone. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)Another fantastic film from Guy Ritchie. I first saw this when I was studying in England. Its similar in tone to Snatch a British gangster film about betrayal and revenge. It sounds like a very serious movie, but its not. This film has a beautiful balance of the serious and the humorous. The soundtrack is also superb, featuring tracks from James Brown, Dusty Springfield and The Stooges.
