This Taiwanese film was screened at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where director Hou Hsiao Hsien was awarded best director.
Set in Tang Dynasty era China, Nie Yinniang (Shu Qi) is the daughter of a general. During her childhood, the girl is kidnapped by a nun who has great martial arts skills. The nun trains young Nie to become a cruel assassin who murders dishonest and fraudulent noblemen.
After a failed assassination, the nun orders Nie to go back home and kill her cousin, Tian Ji'an (Chang Chen), who was once meant to marry her. Tian Ji'an is now one of the most powerful leaders in the army.
