Happy?

Michelle Branch certainly is

Story by Kelly May

Most of us will recognise Michelle Branch as the young artist that performed the smash duet, "The Game Of Love," with Carlos Santana. Michelle is back, without Carlos, with her latest album, Paper Hotel and a new single "Are You Happy Now?"

"I spent the last two years travelling, so when it came to begin work on a new record, I realised that the record had already been written in hotels across the world, hence the name, Paper Hotel." Michelle has used her time well and learned many valuable lessons on the road. Her maturity and confidence as a songwriter outshines other artists her age. With several top 10 hits to her name it's difficult to believe that Michelle is only 20 years old.

Growing pains

Michelle's first single "Are You Happy Now?" is a look into a personal relationship that turned sour. She may be young, but she's certainly not inexperienced when it comes to life and love. Hard hitting lyrics show more honesty than the majority of love songs that rarely touch on the fact that relationships aren't always perfect and trouble free.

Confronting her ex-boyfriend after they have broken up she asks, "Are you happy now?" and demands that he tell her to her face that he is happier now that they are no longer together. The split was difficult and Michelle continues to hurt despite trying to tell her ex-boyfriend that she doesn't care about him or the relationship anymore.

Walking away

As he leaves her life, the singer searches for an ending. She doesn't want him to leave without first knowing how she feels about the situation. She says that he shouldn't pretend that everything is fine. She knows that he lied and that he stopped caring for her and insists that she doesn't care.

The singer asks if she has been removed from his life completely and if he can tell her this to her face. We have no way of knowing how her ex-boyfriend responds to her questions or his side of the story, which may be very different to hers. She puts the blame entirely on him and the way he treated her. According to her, he took everything there was to take, leaving behind a "empty plate."

She insists that she's happier without him, but the listener can't help but wonder if she has really come to terms with the split.

Role-play

In pairs, one person will be the girlfriend and the other the boyfriend. Pretend that you have just broken up and act out a brief role-play of what you might say to each other. It was the boyfriend that decided to end the relationship and the girlfriend should start off by asking, "Are you happy?" The boyfriend can respond in any way he chooses. Think about how he may feel towards his girlfriend, is he upset or relieved about breaking up? Does the girlfriend want to get back together or does she just want to tell the boyfriend how hurt she is. You decide.

Are You Happy Now?

By Michelle Branch

Now, dont just walk away

Pretending everythings OK
And you dont care about me
And I know theres just no use
When all your lies become your truths and I dont care... yeah, yeah, yeah

Could you look me in the eye
And tell me that youre happy now, ohhh, ohhh
Would you tell it to my face or have I been erased
Are you happy now?
Are you happy now?

You took all there was to take
And left me with an empty plate
And you dont care about it, yeah
And I am givin' up this game
Im leaving you with all the blame cause I dont care, yeah, yeah yeah

Could you look me in the eye?
And tell me that youre happy now, oohh oohhh
Would you tell it to my face or have I been erased?
Are you happy now? Ohhh, ohhhh
Are you happy now?
Are you happy now? yeah, yeah, yeah.

Do you really have everything you want?
You could never give somethin' you ain't got
You cant run away from yourself

Could you look me in the eye?
And tell me that you're happy now, yeah, yeah
Come on, tell it to my face or have I been replaced?
Are you happy now? Ohhh, ohhhh
Are you happy now?

Would you look me in the eye?
Could you look me in the eye?
Ive had that all I can take
I'm not about to break
Cause Im happy now, ohhh, ohhh
Are you happy now?
