In brief: This year�s Tour de France winner began his professional career in 1997 with Spanish team ONCE. He rode with the ONCE team for five years before switching to Danish Team CSC, for which he won the 13th stage of the 2003 Tour de France.

Known for his climbing abilities, Sastre attacked the climb up the Alpe d�Huez in the 17th stage of the 2008 Tour de France, beating his teammate Franck Schleck.

In the final time trial, Sastre managed to hold onto his 58-second lead over his closest competitor, Cadel Evans.
