Breaking ground

Operation Exodus brings out the best of the RTS genre

By Shaun Conlin

GAME: Ground Control II: Operation Exodus
PUBLISHER: Sierra
GAME RATING: Teen
GAME TYPE: Real-time strategy
MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: System: 800 MHz processor or equivalent, 128 MB RAM, 32 MB video RAM, 1.5 GB hard drive space
MULTIPLAYER SUPPORT: Internet and  LAN
REVIEWERS OPINION: 4 out of 5

Sierras Ground Control II: Operation Exodus is a real-time strategy (RTS) game, but streamlined, losing most of the finicky management tasks and concentrating on organising troops and units in the thick of battle.

Building on the sci-fi story of its predecessor, Ground Control II is fast and fully 3-D, allowing you to zoom in close on any particular skirmish or pan out to view a battlefield in its entirety.

SIMPLY THE BEST

Adding to the intensity of it all, youll need a line of site to know what the enemy is up to, so troop placement around controlled areas is critical. Ground Control II also uses control points, which, if you take them, will bring reinforcements via ship rather than making you wait for them to plod along your trail or have you fall back to safer ground and recover (or fail).

That waiting is what makes some classic RTS games seem so disheartening. With Ground Control II , you just get all the fun bits. Cox News Service

Hints and tips

If you want to play Ground Control II: Operation Exodus quickly and easily, press ~ ~ (the tilde key on the top left of your keyboard, twice) to bring down the command console, then type gomassive to unlock all the missions. While youre at it, type godmassive for god mode.

Power packed

Street Fighter Anniversary Collection doesnt pull any punches

By Shaun Conlin

Did You Know : In 1994, a movie of the original Street Fighter game was released. It starred Kylie Minogue.

GAME: Street Fighter Anniversary Collection
GAME TYPE: Fighting
PUBLISHER: Capcom
GAME RATING: Teen
GAME HARDWARE: PlayStation 2
REVIEWERS OPINION: 4 out of 5

Old-school, 2-D fighting doesnt really have a place on the new-generation PlayStation 2 console unless you put two of the very best examples on one disc and sell it for virtually nothing.

And wouldnt you know it, Capcoms Street Fighter Anniversary Collection is just that, a double hit of the stylishly animated, highly addictive side-view fighting games Hyper Street Fighter II (itself a combination of five different Street Fighter II releases) and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike.

This package offers a big batch of burly fighters beating the heck out of each other through intensely complicated button combinations and/or maniacal button-mashing. But thats what you like, isnt it? Cox News Service
