Taylor Swift goes pop
Taylor Swift
1989
Big Machine
Country pop princess Taylor Swift recently released her fifth album, 1989. The album’s first single, “Shake it Off,” has already been hugely successful, hitting the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US.
With this album, Taylor has been criticised by some for abandoning her pop country roots to embrace and purely modern mainstream pop sound. The songs on 1989 are certainly catchy and definitely seem to be aimed at the teen pop market. There are some electronic sounds in the mix, along with drum programming in rhythms and tempos that are quite a bit faster than what Taylor’s fans might be used to.
All of the songs on this album were co-written by Taylor, and her knack for coming up with a catchy melody remains intact.
Although 1989 marks a change in Taylor’s signature sound, fans of the 25-year-old songstress should still find plenty to enjoy here. The album has already proved to be a big hit internationally, so it will be interesting to see where Taylor takes her new sound in the future. — VH
