On the world known as Cittagazze, people are lucky to have a young hero and heroine looking out for them. It seems the adults on Cittagazze are in danger from soul-eating ghosts known as Specters only children are safe from these unpleasant creatures.

When Will Parrys father disappears, he and his friend Lyra Belacqua go on a mission to find out what happened. Will and Lyra have to make their way towards Oxford a place where they assume they will find Wills missing father.

On the way, their enemies and the police obstruct their quest. And the more Will and Lyra look for his father, the closer they are brought to a special knife an object that mortals, witches, beasts and spirits all seem to be hunting for.

Creative yet complicated

The Subtle Knife is the second book in Philip Pullmans His Dark Materials trilogy. Lyra was the main character in the first book, Golden Compass.

It is remarkable that the author has managed to create an entirely new mythology and combine it with science to create his new world. The main theme, however, remains the same as any other teen-oriented fantasy novel: the battle between good and evil.

This book is very creative, but has a complicated plot and multi-layered characters, meaning it may be a bit of a tough read for all but those with the best English skills.

This book is definitely worth reading, if you can understand it.
