In brief: Park Ji-Sung left school at 18 to become a professional footballer. However, his short height caused a number of football clubs to reject him.
In 2001, Japanese team Kyoto Purple Sanga offered Park a contract. In 2002, South Korean national team coach Guus Hiddink spotted Park's talent and took him to play with his Dutch club, PSV Eindhoven. Park played with the team until 2005.
In 2005, Manchester United's Alex Ferguson was impressed with Park's skills and picked him up for an estimated £4 million (204 million baht) to play for Manchester United. Park became the first Asian to ever captain Manchester United when Ryan Giggs passed the armband to him during a home game.
Park was out for most of the 2008 season due to knee surgery. He recently returned to the field with his skills intact.
