Fifty-two people were injured, three of them seriously, after two trains collided recently in Ayutthaya’s Phachi district, authorities say.

Read the following story from the Bangkok Post to learn more about this accident.

The accident, in which a Bangkok-Den Chai train collided with a train plying the Bangkok-Nong Khai route, occurred between Map Phrajan and Phra Kaeo railway stations on March 26.

The three people seriously injured were identified as Apidech Akkarawitthayakhom, 45, Sompol Karnbanchee, 48, and Termpong Singchuwong, 38. Both Sompol and Termpong are railway employees. All the seriously injured were taken to Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Hospital, officials from the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) said on March 27.

COSTLY DAMAGE

SRT workers on March 27 went to clear the wreckage and assess the damage, later estimated at more than 80 million baht, SRT engineer Naris Khamrattana said. The SRT that same day succeeded in recovering the derailed locomotives and eight carriages, Naris said. He added that the wreckage was removed to one of three tracks running between the stations to allow the other two tracks to be used.

The SRT said there could be some delays to services until the clear-up operation is complete.

COMPENSATION OFFERED

According to SRT governor Wuthichart Kalyanamitra, the accident occurred after the Bangkok-Den Chai train driver ignored a signal near Map Phrajan station and slammed into the other stationary train. He offered his sympathies to the injured, saying that the SRT would compensate them.

An investigation will be also carried out in order to come up with better safety measures to prevent this from happening again, Wuthichart said.
