Sound Check Sophisticated soundsNew releases are music to the ears Various
Artists Juno has been hailed as the hottest indie film of the year, so naturally theres a soundtrack available to purchase. One great thing about this album is that you dont need to see the film to appreciate its soundtrack. Most soundtracks these days are a mishmash of unrelated songs used for particular scenes in the movie then thrown together randomly for an album. But each song on Juno blends seamlessly with the others, maintaining the same mood and theme throughout. Like the movie, the soundtrack is sharp, yet innocent and gentle. The music is a blend of soft, eccentric folk and rock from indie darlings like Belle and Sebastian, Sonic Youth and Cat Power. There are also some great older classics from The Kinks, Buddy Holly, The Velvet Underground and All The Young Dudes, written by David Bowie and performed by Mott the Hoople. The album starts with Barry Louis Polisars All I Want Is You, which sets the tone for both the film and the album. Probably the most interesting inclusion is the version of the Moldy Peaches Anyone Else but You, sung by main actors Ellen Page and Michael Cera. The original version is also included on the album, which makes the cover version quite a sweet track to end on. Like the Garden State soundtrack a few years ago, this one flows well and suits the movie. Juno is a nice compilation that works whether or not youve seen the film, so do yourself a favour and pick up a copy. TB Lydia Moving On is the third effort from Lydia, the singer who claims the title of the Thai Princess of R&B. This time around, her look is more modern and fashionable. The record is in a pop-R&B style with a more up-to-date sound than shes had before. Lydia has a very unique voice that makes her stand out from the crowd. The first track, Nung Vi Na Tee (One Second), shows off her powerful voice and impressive improvising skills. Other tracks reflect the input of the talented teams that have come together to work on this project. Lydia keeps her signature pop-R&B style on this album, but everything is a step up from her previous records. VH Orwell Le Genie Humain is the local release from French pop band Orwell. The music on this album is sunny retro-pop with a sophisticated feel. Orwell use lots of funky old keyboards and synthesisers to create music that would have sounded futuristic in the 1960s. The tracks Dust Cover, Septembre and Plus Linfini have a relaxing acoustic sound, with nice, quirky melodies and arrangements that hold your interest. The lyrics are in English and French, but the music is so interestingly orchestrated that the vocals tend to just blend into the overall sound. Some of the songs sound as if they come from a 60s European movie soundtrack. The album ends on a high note with two great remixes by local legends Stylish Nonsense and Cyndi Seui of the opening track I Need an End. Le Genie Humain is a great album to cool down and chill out with on a hot summer day. BE
