DURIAN DEBATE

Do you like fruit? Some fruit can only grow in cool countries, and some can only grow in hot countries.

Durian is a kind of fruit that is famous in hot countries.

Have you ever eaten durian? Durian has a spiky shape and a strong smell. Somebody said that it has a taste from heaven and a smell from hell.

I like durian very much, both the taste and the smell.

Now, Thai scientists will try to lessen its strong smell.

But fruit lovers say this is the beginning of the end, and a durian without its smell would be just like a rose without thorns.

What do you think?

Arpharat Sarnthoy, Bangkok

I think it doesnt really matter to me, Arpharat. I absolutely hate durian, and there is nothing that scientists can do short of making it taste like strawberries and smell like flowers that will make me like it. But I understand that there are many people who do like durian, so Id have to say that it would probably be best if scientists left the fruit alone. You either love it or hate it, so I dont see any reason to try to change it. Editor

FRIENDS FOREVER

Hello, my name is James. I have known Student Weekly for only a few months, but I really like it.

Now I would like to tell you a short story about friendship that happened to me.

When I was a child, friendship seemed to be full of fun. I always laughed, smiled and played with my friends together. I have many impressive memories.

When I was in my junior year, for the first time I was so confused. I didnt have any real friends because friendship was fake. Competitions had become most important.

I felt like a fool and could not stand this any more, so I called one of my classmates who I trusted most at that time. I talked to her and she willingly helped me discuss the problems. She became my close friend after that.

Thus, I was more myself and I knew what I wanted. Then I knew why I could not get along well with my friends. It was because I hated the changes and I was not myself, so I always looked at the bad side of people.

After I had realised this, I changed my views, and everything changed, too. I had more friends, with no fake friendships. We all became good friends, and we could overcome all difficulties.

Although we are now separated, I never forget my best friend.

Korachat Pomsoong, Lop Buri

Hi, James. Im glad to hear you finally discovered Student Weekly, and Im even happier to hear that you like our magazine. Your story is a great example of how positive thinking and taking action can improve what may seem like a hopeless situation. I hope other students can learn from your valuable experience. Editor

Future plans

Lots of things happen in my life. Now Im nearly 15 years old. Ive just been doing some serious thinking, and I have dreams for my future.

Sometimes, I think Im unlike others. I want to be a musician and a singer, because I want to be like Tor+ Saksit. He is my favourite singer.

Sometimes I want to work with English because I love English very much. But Im not serious.

I think that one day Im going to know what Ill be, and I have my god who gives me comforting messages such as dont stop dreaming and keep on doing good.

I always say that nothing is impossible.

Sorrawit Kiattiwongchai, Chachoengsao

Well, Sorrawit, there are a few things that are impossible but I understand what youre saying. Im sure that youll eventually find something you love to do, and when you do, your positive thinking and great attitude will help you succeed at it. Best of luck! Editor

QUIET PLEASE

I went to the cinema to watch Spider-Man 3 yesterday. No, Im not gonna spoil the movie. Im gonna talk about cinema ghosts.

By cinema ghosts, I mean those talking over the phone and speaking about the movie being shown. I dont know who the first person to compare these people to ghosts was, but the word is used on many webboards. There are also kid ghosts those kids who cry during movies.

OK. Ill get back to my story. While I was enjoying Spider-Man 3, one middle-aged man picked up his phone and talked out loud for, like, five minutes. He said, Im watching a movie. Ill call you back. I thought he was going to hang up. But, no, he continued his conversation about his sick dog! It was so annoying.

He really got on my nerves. Doesnt he have any manners? If he had sat right next to me, I would have done something like telling him to shut up.

By the way, Spider-Man 3 is really fun. Youve got to see it.

Chidchanok Suntornpas, Bangkok

Oh, dont worry, Chidchanok, I went to see Spider-Man 3 on opening day. Youre right, it was an amazing movie! Luckily for me, there werent any cinema ghosts at the showing I went to. I agree with you that people who talk during movies are truly annoying. Unfortunately, Im not sure what we can do about it. I mean, in this day and age, is there anyone still out there who doesnt know it is extremely rude to talk on the phone during a movie? Probably not. So those who do are probably beyond help. Editor
