Letter of The Week

GREED IS GOOD?

Dear Editor. Ive written to you before, but this is quite a long letter, so I would ask that you spend some time reading it. I would like to tell to everyone that I couldnt live without money. I love money as much as my body, and I would rather have money than a girlfriend. I need money to live, and money can make me feel good, happy and also make me forget everything that I have done wrong. I also save at least 20 baht each day; I have been saving money since I was 10.

Now I have just turned 17. Some of my friends tell me that I should spend more money on myself. Then often call me stingy, but I know they are kidding. My friends advise me to buy clothes, shoes, school bags, a watch, etc. Surprisingly, one of my friends advised me to keep my money in the bank. I dont know when or why that idea occurred, but I prefer to keep my money myself, so that whenever I want to see my money, I can see it. I do not let anyone know how much I have, even my family.

Anyway, I would like to answer some questions that people have asked me. One day, someone said to me, How would you spend your money and what would you like to do with it?

First of all, I would like to spend my money on my family and on myself. Then I would like to help beggars and starving people. Next, I would donate some money to organisations that help peoples lives. After that, I would like to travel around the world. Finally, I would start my own business. Thats all I would like to do with my money, but I have not started my plans yet. Please let me ask the same question to you. How would you spend your money if you had enough money to burn?

Jeffrey Gabe, via email

Hello again Jeffrey. You love money as much as your own body? I wonder what you would say to someone who is born mentally or physically handicapped and cannot earn money. Do you think their position would be the same? Thats something to think about. Its good that you save money, though dont end up getting caught in the credit card trap. As to what Id do if I had money to burn, Id start by retiring! Id still carry on as Student Weekly editor, of course, but it would be a labour of love rather than a job. Editor

GAMING GGRUMBLES

Dear Editor. I really have problems with my friends because many of them like to play computer games. In fact, many students dont go to school, but go to computer shops to play online. When you play computer games too much, your brain deteriorates and you get problems with your eyes. Some games are good because they develop the brain and make you clever, but if you play games too much, youll deteriorate too. Now you know the bad things and good things about games, and I hope every student who reads my letter will know what to choose.

Apinut Rattanachueskul Songkhla

Hello Apinut. Well, I have to say that Ive been playing computer games for the last 10 or more years and I think my brain and eyes are pretty much OK (although I did wear glasses until I had LASIK surgery earlier this year). Its all about balance and moderation. While I still like to play games even at my age, I also try to get plenty of exercise and spend some time away from the computer. Editor

THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC

Hi there. Id like to talk about music. I think everybody knows what music means. Sometimes we use music to communicate and sometime music is a better way to communicate than to talk. Some songs have very good meanings. I think music is very important for the world: Without music, what would the earth be like? Would it be very terrible?

My hobby is playing the piano and my favourite music is pop and hip-hop. I think pop music is easy to listen to and hip-hop is similar to rap. When I feel anxious, I listen to pop music. My favourite singer is Tata Young; she is Thai-American and now she sings in English. I think most of the people like music because it helps relax you. I always sing when I hear my favourite music. Maybe one day, I will become a singer. It would be great job. What do you think?

Nuttanit Noppanich
Woranari Chaloem School

Hello Nuttanit. I do love music and I play the guitar (yes, I can play Hotel California and, yes, I hate the song as everybody knows), although I first learned to play the clarinet. I certainly couldnt live without music, but my singing is restricted to singing in the shower when no one else is around. As to a career as a singer, go for it and live your dream! Editor
