Medicine mix-up

Patients given the wrong drugs

Almost 1,000 patients have received the wrong medicine due to packaging errors, the director of Makarak Hospital in Kanchanaburi said on September 7.

The revelation came after the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation admitted at the beginning of September that staff had mistakenly put heart medicine into packaging for hypertension drugs.

The packaging mix-up occurred in July. The GPO said it had recalled the wrongly packed drugs from five hospitals in Kanchanaburi, Si Sa Ket, Chaiyaphum, Suphan Buri and Lop Buri provinces.

Makarak Hospital director Thirachai Khongiamtrakun said the hospital received the wrongly packaged medicine and that 939 mostly elderly patients had been given the wrong drugs.
