University Tips

People's projects

By Ajarn Helen Jandamit

Welcome back to University Tips and the new school year. University Tips is here to help you prepare for the English exams that are coming your way. It gives you practise answering questions similar to those you may have at school and also on the university entrance examination.

Apart from many temples and ancient ruins, the central province of Ang Thong offers visitors the opportunity to visit some of Her Majesty the Queen's community projects.

Farming and fishing communities that are more than100 years old can be found along the Chao Phraya River in Ang Thong. Many local farmers and fishermen have benefitted from Her Majesty the Queen's community projects.

One of these, started in 1976, is the Ban Bang Sadet Court Doll Centre in Pamok district. The centre is housed in an old teak house that was built in the Ayuthaya period.

The dolls made at the centre show examples of traditional community life and culture, such as children playing traditional Thai musical instruments. As well as keeping a Thai tradition alive, the women who make the popular souvenir dolls earn income for their families.

Another project, the Model Farm Project at Ban Yang Klang, teaches villagers modern farming techniques. State officials give directions, but local farmers and villagers can choose how they look after their farms.

The main aim of the model farm project is to start a local food product centre. Some farmers grow dragon fruit and mushrooms, while others keep goats and pigs.

In Pamok district of Ang Thong, there is the drum-making village of Ekkarat where people make drums in many different shapes and sizes. Visitors can buy drums from the villagers, and drums can also be made to order.

Drum-making club secretary Apijik Chavarat said that visitors can also take a tour of the village to learn about its history.
