Located in the north of Thailand, Phayao province boasts plenty of tourist attractions and natural resources. The centuries-old capital city of the province, also called Phayao, is famed for its cultural heritage and a peaceful way of life.

For this week’s Freeze Frame, SW explores this picturesque province.

A villager holds a basket of traditional preserved mango pulp, known locally as mamuang guan. Behind her stands a wooden Tai Lue-style house.

The Phu Sang waterfall attracts lots of tourists every year. The waterfall is unique in that its water temperature is consistently around 36 degrees Celsius throughout the year, even in the cold season.

Phra Kaeo Temple in Chiang Kham district once housed the Emerald Buddha, which is now enshrined at Sri Rattana Satsadaram Temple in Bangkok.

Nantaram is dazzlingly decorated with wooden shingles and layers of gold leaf. Built by ethnic-Shan residents in 1924, this religious site is one of the best known attractions in Phayao.

Phayao has plenty of natural resources and green forests where those who are interested in nature and natural sciences are encouraged to explore.
