Rafael decided to take up tennis instead of football after his uncle Toni introduced him to the sportwhen he was 12 years old. Toni has been Rafael�s coach ever since.

In 2003, Rafael became the second-youngest player to be ranked among the world�s top 100 singles players. He finished the year in the top 50.

From April 2005 to May 2007, Rafael won a record 81 straight clay court matches before Federer beat him in the 2007 Hamburg Masters final. It is the longest winning streak for a male player on a single surface. Rafael and Federer are well known for being strong competitors on the court.
