Letter of the week

WISE WORDS

I found two Thai proverbs published in an old newspaper. One of them was, "Ride an elephant to catch grasshoppers," and the other was, "Burn your house to frighten away the mice." I collected more than 50 proverbs in my diary.

I use the proverbs as one of my teaching aids. I was given the Provincial Award in 1991 in Rayong for being outstanding in finding different ways to teach English.

Now I also like to use Student Weekly for teaching in my English class!

Another great Thai proverb is, "Nobody is too old to learn."

Ajarn Supoj Jaraswimol,
Rayong

Thanks for writing in again, Ajarn Supoj. Proverbs can definitely teach us some useful basic truths. It's a good idea to use them in your English teaching classes too, since as well as imparting some wise ideas, proverbs often demonstrate an imaginative use of words and language. And I'm glad that you find Student Weekly useful as a teaching aid, too! — Editor

STREETS AHEAD

Hello Student Weekly! We just had a long weekend, and my family and I stayed in Bangkok. I'm kind of glad that we did because the traffic in the city was much better than it usually is. When we drove somewhere to go out for lunch or to do some shopping, the drive that would normally take about 45 minutes only took about 10 minutes!

I wish the traffic could be like that all the time. How about you, did you go away for the long weekend?

Pang Chaiyong,
Bangkok

Thanks for your letter, Pang. I stayed in Bangkok over the long weekend as well. For the reason you mentioned, I think it's always good to stay in the city at the times when so many people leave. The roads are relatively clear and it never gets too crowded anywhere. All in all it was a pretty pleasant weekend in Bangkok. — Editor

SERIOUS SERIES

Many Thai people don't know the differences between HIV and AIDS, including me until recently. Even many Thai TV dramas portray people with HIV or AIDS in a bad way. But recently I watched the teen GTH series Hormones. In the series, they showed that HIV and AIDS are not the same and that people with these diseases can live like normal people.

I think that movies and TV dramas can influence us and make people change their attitudes in a positive way.

Benz Promsuwan,
Bangkok

Thanks for your letter, Benz. It's great to hear that dramas are being produced that can actually teach viewers something useful and have a positive effect on the way people think. I hope that's a trend that continues to develop in the television world — not that it will affect me much either way, since I never watch TV anyway. — Editor
