Bleak forecast

Jobless numbers to rise

Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) projects a 10 percent rise in jobless figures among students expected to graduate with a bachelor's degree next year.

The number of unemployed graduates is likely to jump from 145,000 to about 170,000 next year, Yongyuth Chalamwong, director of TDRI's labour development research project, said on October 11.

"The government's policies to raise the minimum daily wage and the starting salaries of graduates to 15,000 baht a month were the main cause," said Yongyuth. "The wage increase had prompted many employers to freeze employment and even reduce staff."
