Letter of the week

WORLDLY KNOWLEDGE

I was wondering what you knew about Thailand or Bangkok before living here? I wonder because when I was in the US for an English summer course, I had friends from Japan, France, Mexico, Argentina and Venezuela, and some of them asked me if I rode an elephant to school. I was surprised. Since my English wasn’t good enough to explain in detail, I just joked about it.

Anyway, I met few Americans who had actually visited Thailand and they said they liked it. I was happy to hear that.

So what you know about Thailand before you came here?

Nattarika Kasamsak,
Bangkok

Thanks for your letter Nattarika. I always try to find out something about every place that I plan to visit, so I read up on Thailand before I came for the first time to learn a bit about the history and way of life here. I also had friends and family members who had visited Thailand before me, and I had some Thai friends back in Australia, so I was able to get some information from them. But even after living here for a few years, I still feel like I’m learning new things about the Land of Smiles every day. — Deputy Editor

COOL COLUMNS

I’m currently in my second year of college. I’ve been reading your magazine since I was a high school student.

I just wanted to let you know that I enjoy reading your regular column about celebrities’ favourite books, films and music a lot. I’m a fan of many of these artists and I’ve always wondered what kind of movies or albums they normally watch or listen to in their free time. Your articles are just what I needed. They have really helped me discover a lot of new music, movies and books that I’d never heard of before.

Thank you so much for this and I hope that Student Weekly magazine will keep going!

Vimandin Bonfha,
Bangkok

Glad you like our articles and that you continue to read Student Weekly, Vimandin. We’ll do our best to keep up the good work! — Deputy Editor

SENSITIVE STUDENT

I’m a university student. My friends told me that I have mood swings, and that I’m too sensitive or too aggressive from time to time. I don’t like this aspect of my personality, but I find it hard to control my feelings and emotions, especially when I’m into something or when I’m mad at somebody.

I try to keep quiet and spend time reading lots of books. Maybe I’m just not good at human relationships.

Somying Sirikasemsarn,
Chiang Mai

There’s nothing wrong with reading lots of books, Somying, but don’t give up trying to get along with your friends. The years spend as a student can be stressful and difficult, and it’s a time when you’re exposed to a lot of new thoughts and ideas. Listen to your friends’ advice, and if you think what they’re saying is valid, work on controlling your emotions and feelings. Don’t get mad at people if they disagree with you about something. Try to spend some time doing some fun things with your friends, and you might find that your personal relationships improve. Good luck! — Deputy Editor
