Flure guitarist shares his favourites
By Tatat Bunnag
Theodor Gaston (Teddy) is well-known on the local music scene as a guitarist with alternative rockers Flure. The band formed in the early 2000s and became one of the most popular acts on the legendary Bakery label. Flure haven't released any new music for nearly a decade, but still perform regularly.
Recently, Teddy has been playing with other top indie acts including Ornaree, Saliva Bastards, Yellow Fang and Ghost Cat, the new indie supergroup that features members from Sqweez Animal and Groove Riders.
Student Weekly asked Teddy to tell us about some of the albums that have inspired him.
Dr. Dog
Easy Beat (2005)
“This US rock band weren’t well known when they released Easy Beat. It sounds like rock music from the late ‘60s, but the album really comes to life if you listen to the lyrics. The words are never too complicated. They’re about simple things that anybody can experience. This album is like a good friend.”
Department of Eagles
In Ear Park (2008)
“The first time I heard In Ear Park, I got goosebumps. The songs are so clever and complex. It’s hard to believe that they created the music with samples, using cheap recording software and a borrowed microphone. People describe their music as indie-folk, but I think their biggest influence is classical music. It shows what you can do even if you can’t afford to record in a professional studio.”
Blonde Redhead
Blonde Redhead (1995)
“This album was released in 1995, but it’s still relevant today. This is probably the heaviest Blonde Redhead album and it perfectly captures the teen angst of the ‘90s. The band actually came here last year for the Wonderfruit Music Festival, but unfortunately I couldn’t make it to the show.”
Deerhoof
Breakup Songs (2012)
“This is the eleventh studio album from Deerhoof. The music is complicated and sophisticated, but it’s done in a fun way that makes you smile. There’s chaos and beauty in all of their songs. This album makes breaking up sound fun! I saw them live once a couple of years ago in Bangkok. They were brilliant.”
Toro Y Moi
Underneath the Pine (2011)
“Is this music shoegaze, disco, funk or electronic? American artist Toro Y Moi mixes different styles together to create his own musical universe. With fantastic production and songwriting, Underneath the Pine really stands out. As well as the popular songs, there’s some exciting and strange music on this album.”
