Lazarus
Colorcode
Wednesday is solo performer Put Suksriwan, who creates unique, rocking soundscapes with layered guitar loops, funky electro beats, live drums and various other interesting sound effects. Released through diverse local label Colorcode, Lazarus is Wednesday's second album.
Opening with a brief but beautiful piano piece called "A Very Kind Intention," Lazarus kicks into gear with the second track, "Apollo Pt.1," which makes great use of Wednesday's melodic and hypnotic guitars. The driving "Apollo Pt.5" follows, building on the spacey atmosphere with a repetitive rhythm contrasted with what sounds like loose live drums used to relieve the tension.
"Intermission" introduces a slower, meditative feel, followed by the fractured funky groove of "Lazarus," a track that perfectly sums up Wednesday's layered guitar sound.
Other album highlights include the sci-fi sounding "Paolo" and the dreamy last track, "Bad Garden," which includes the album's only vocals.
As the song titles suggest, Lazarus has an overall space travel theme, and since the entire album is less than half an hour long, it's best to listen to all the way through.
The CD also features beautiful artwork by Lolay Thaweesak and Chiang Mai-based artist Bess Dolin. Fans of Cornelius, imaginative instrumental guitar rock or interesting new music in general should definitely check out Lazarus. — BE
