Did you know

Bell used to be a DJ at Chill FM

As a veteran pop singer, Supol Phuasirirak (Bell) is known for his rich and mellow voice as well as his catchy hits including “Ta Nai Lok Nee Mai Mee (If the World Doesn’t Have…),” “Yak Hai Lok Nee Khaep Long (Wish the World Was Smaller)” and “Mai Thammada (Extraordinary).”

Recently, Bell has worked with producer Cyndi Seui on his latest single, “Tua La Korn Lab (Secret Crush).” Student Weekly met up with the 30-something singer at a hotel where was performing a live show. After the rehearsal, Bell told us about his producer, his music and his hobby.

Student Weekly: What was working with Cyndi Seui like?

Bell: We get excited and have fun working together, and he enjoys experimenting. Also, he’s childlike, so it felt like hanging out with a brother and having an adventure in a jungle with an experienced guide.

Student Weekly: Was there anything he wanted to try that you weren’t sure about?

Bell: He created an innovative melody for one song’s introduction. I really liked it, but I was worried that listeners might not enjoy the song, so I decided to make it more pop.

Student Weekly: How did you feel when some commenters on YouTube said they didn’t enjoy “Secret Crush”?

Bell: We accept the comments, but when we released the single we didn’t mean to make a complicated song for a niche market. We were looking for something new, but we wanted it to reach many listeners. For the next song, I’ll focus on beautiful melodies which can reach more people.

Student Weekly: Do you like detective movies since your video has a detective storyline?

Bell: I like various kinds of movies and series. I enjoy detective, thriller and mystery movies because of their secrecy and excitement, but recently it’s rare to find these kinds of movies.

Student Weekly: Did it surprise you when people paid a lot of attention to gossip about your relationship with actor Vaan Ratchu?

Bell: Not at all. It’s natural for Thai people to pay attention to personal news. But I was surprised that it wasn’t the first time that there was news about Vaan and me. We’ve always been close, but I don’t understand why people think about us that way.

Student Weekly: How do you feel about people streaming music rather than downloading it?

Bell: Though downloading a song legally is great, streaming music is fine. As long as people listen to our music, it’s OK. Every singer works hard. If there’s a song that you like, talk about it. A positive comment on YouTube means a lot.

Student Weekly: Which live show have you enjoyed the most so far?

Bell: It was a Christmas event at my old school, Assumption College. It was the first time I performed in front of my juniors. Before my show, all the speakers were broken because students used them for music competitions. The sound engineers decided to turn the musicians’ monitor speakers to the audience.

I told the audience that this show was a senior singing for juniors. It was great fun. I was impressed with their fantastic energy. I’m always delighted to see audiences very happy. We connected, and though the speakers were broken, it didn’t spoil anything.

Student Weekly: Why are you interested in collecting vinyl records?

Bell: I’m a music lover. To listen to vinyl records requires special equipment and the result is great sound quality. It’s the charm of vinyl.

Student Weekly: Is it true that you also collect designer toys?

Bell: Yes, I’ve liked them since I was at university, but couldn’t afford them then. In the past, I planned to run a toy business, so I searched for information and fell in love with the toys. Designer toys are more like an art object than a toy. We don’t play with them, we admire their beautiful and creative design.
