Famed monk passes away

Followers flocked to Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital to pay their respects to famous monk Luang Phor Khoon, who died on May 16 at the age of 92.

Luang Phor Khoon passed away at 11:45 am, a hospital spokesman said. The late abbot of Ban Rai Temple in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Dan Khun Thot district developed internal bleeding in the chest and also suffered from respiratory failure.

Luang Phor Khoon was born in Korat and entered the monkhood when he was 21. According to his will, the abbot asked that his body be donated to Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Medicine to be used for medical study.

Village head arrested

Police arrested a village head in Chumphon for allegedly helping to traffic 74 migrants from Myanmar to Thailand, where three female victims were subsequently raped, authorities reported on May 16.

The group of 15 women and 59 men were left starving in a forest in Chumphon for several days when people smugglers fled a crackdown on their activities after the discovery of a mass grave of trafficked victims in Songkhla.

Police arrested one of two key suspects, identified as Prasert Sangkhom, 52, the village head of Ban Moo 2 in Tha Sae district, Chumphon.

Man robs Chiang Mai bank

A man robbed a bank. It happened at a branch of Thanachart Bank in Chiang Mai on May 16. The man stole 129,000 baht. Officials said the robbery took only 26 seconds.
