Hot DJ makes a playlist

By Tatat Bunnag

Did you know

In 2012, Off was voted one of the 50 Most Eligible Bachelors in Cleo magazine.

Some people are great singers, while others are really good at acting. Some, like 25-year-old Chainon Chantem (Off) seem born to be all-round entertainers.

Off is well-known among radio listeners as a DJ on Virgin Star 98 FM. Before becoming a heart-throb DJ, Off had experience in showbiz working as a model, an actor, a TV host and a singer.

Off has always had a strong passion for different types of music, from pop and rock to R&B. It’s that diversity that attracts plenty of listeners to his exciting radio show.

Student Weekly recently seized the opportunity to ask Off about some of his all-time favourite albums.

Bodyslam
Save My Life (2007, Genie Records)

“Save My Life is Bodyslam’s fourth album. It came out in 2007 when the band was developing new directions for their music. The album’s first single, “Ya Pit [Poison],” was a huge hit. As a high school kid, this album totally blew me away. The song “Aog Huk [Broken Heart]” is also great. Save My Life is one of the few albums that I can enjoy listening to all the way through without skipping any tracks.”

ETC
Plean (Change) (2007, KPN Music)

“What I love so much about ETC is their great musicianship. Each member of the group is incredibly talented. They always write great songs and most of them are guaranteed to top the local music charts.

“Plean is an album with a lot of great pop songs and ballads. While Bodyslam make me want to jump around and rock out, ETC music make me want to sit back and listen carefully to their music.”

Jason Mraz
We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. (2008, Atlantic)

“I enjoy listening to all kinds of music, but when I was younger I listened mostly to local artists. My English language skills were kind of poor, so I tended to stay away from international music. But Jason was an artist that made me want to try listening to English language songs.

“There are so many hit singles on this album, like “I’m Yours,” “Make It Mine” and “Lucky.” My personal favourite is “Live High.” I went to see Jason’s concert in Bangkok last year and it didn’t disappoint me at all.”

Bruno Mars
Unorthodox Jukebox (2012, Atlantic)

“Like a lot of people, I first discovered the magic of Bruno Mars’ music from this album. I don’t think there are many people who haven’t heard his hit song, “When I Was Your Man.”

“I fell in love with Bruno’s unique singing style. He’s the kind of singer that you can recognise right away. He’s also an amazing performer onstage. I often watch his live shows on YouTube.”

Various Artists
Tempo-po (2011, GMM Grammy)

“Now it’s time to talk about an album that I’m on! [Laughs.] Tempo-po was a special project featuring up-and-coming singers signed to GMM Grammy at the time. Apart from me, there are three other singers on this compilation. I sang two tracks on the album — “Kum-tam Khong Kwam Ngao [Question of Loneliness]” and “Lab-ta Kor Ru [See With Eyes Closed].” I think it’s a really good album. [Laughs.]”
