Pods roots

Indie icon picks inspiring sounds

Indie icon Thanachai Ujjin (Pod) has a wide-ranging taste in music. Throughout his career he has tried different styles with varying degrees of success.

Pod is known for his unique voice, which is capable of covering everything from a soulful whisper to an earth-shaking scream.

• Did you know •
Modern Dogs hit song Before was written by Thai artist Pathomporn Pathomporn (Pry).

While fronting Modern Dog for the past 15 years, the 36-year-old singer has also lent his voice to a wide variety of projects, never sticking to just one style of music.

From the electronic dance sounds of Zomkiat Ariyachaipanich to the recent R&B collaboration with Boyd Kosiyabong, everything Pod touches tends to be top-notch.

It would be narrow-minded and boring to only listen to rock music, Pod said. Singing on Boyds album showcased my sweet and soft side its music that I love but might be too shy to write myself.

Modern Dogs new album is due for release later this year. In the meantime, Pod revealed his musical roots by sharing his five favourite Thai albums with Student Weekly.

Chatree
Rak Sib
Babb (1979)

I grew up listening to Chatree. It was the first band that I got into and sang along with.

Chatree were an easy-listening pop band with innocent, straightforward songs about love and relationships. They were together for more than 10 years and released lots of great albums.

Songs like Joob [Kiss] and Peenee Phom Ar-yu 24 [Im Turning 24 this Year] are some of my favourites.

Rewat Buddhinan & Kitakawee
Rao Ma Rong Pleng Gan (1982)

Rao Ma Rong Pleng Gan was a one-off project by a group that featured Rewat and a band called Kitakawee. It came out before Rewat released his first solo album.

It was one of the first Thai records to move away from basic song structures and sentimental lyrics, which was the formula for commercial success in those days.

All the tunes on this album are unique and brilliant, and theyve been covered by many artists. The lyrics definitely influenced my songwriting.

Pansak Ransibrahmanakul
Pai Talay (1984)

Back in the 80s, Nite Spot Production was one of the biggest music labels in Thailand, and Pansak was the first artist signed to them.

Pai Talay [Go to the Sea] was the first Thai album to have a music video. It combines pop, soul and reggae, which sounded very modern at the time, and it was recorded in the US.

Pansaks music is influenced by the beauty of nature and the sea. At that time, I was crazy about going to the beach, too.

Petch Osathanugrah
Tammada (Mun Pen Ruang Tammada) (1987)

Ive been a big fan of this album since it came out. Back then, it was unlike anything else around.

Its a very stylish pop record with a touch of electronic music. It sounds like music for the future. It was ahead of its time in terms of production.

I went to Petchs concert recently, and he performed some of the tunes from this album. Theyre amazing and still sound incredibly fresh and modern, despite being 20 years old.

Asanee-Wasan
Bah Horb Fang (1986)

This album came out when I was in Matayom 3, and it totally blew me away. Asanee and Wasan got me interested in rock music and inspired me to form my first band. We played songs from this album in the school band competition.

During Modern Dogs tour last year, I borrowed [Modern Dogs bassist] May-Ts iPod, and I came across Bah Horb Fang. I hadnt listened to it for a long time, and it really brought back the good old days.
