PURPLE DAYSMy boss bought purple T-shirts for every employee in the country. We wore them to honour the auspicious occasion of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's 60th birthday. Not only were there purple flags up all around the country, but there were also many activities for citizens to pay respect to our beloved Princess. We made merit, prayed and wished her good luck, health and happiness. The Princess' kindness is beyond description. She is very devoted to the Thai people. Kanthida Ammuaychailert, I noticed a lot of purple T-shirts and flags all over the place a couple of weeks ago, Kanthida. I've been in Thailand long enough that I actually knew what their significance was. I was happy to see so many people wearing purple during that time. We here at Student Weekly hope that Princess Sirindhorn had a wonderful birthday and we wish her long life and good health. — Editor |
TOTALLY CROSSED OUT
I like crosswords. They help me learn more and more vocabulary.
In addition, medical research indicates that crosswords help older people's brains stay active and less forgetful.
Tongjai Ui Yananond,
Bangkok
It's great that you like crosswords, Tongjai. You're right, research has shown that older people who do crosswords and engage in other activities that challenge their minds are more likely to stay mentally healthy well into their senior years. We hope you enjoy the crossword and other puzzles that Student Weekly brings you in every issue. — Editor
ROAD TO NOWHERE
I read in the newspaper that 364 people were killed in road accidents over the Songkran holiday. In addition, 3,559 people were injured. That is more injuries and deaths than happened last year.
It is upsetting that so many people are hurt or killed during this happy holiday. I think that a lot of accidents happen because people drink alcohol and then try to drive.
I hope that things will get better in the future.
Nutt,
via email
It is tragic that so many people are killed and injured every year on the roads of Thailand, Nutt. The Songkran holiday period is especially dangerous. Unfortunately it seems like nothing really has changed much in the time that I've lived in Thailand. I'm sure that comprehensive education of drivers, public awareness campaigns about the dangers of drink driving and adequate law enforcement would help a lot. Let's hope that happens. — Editor
