Firewall failure

Blaze damages government lab

A government laboratory went up in flames on October 16 causing 1 million baht in damage.

Two people were working at the water quality testing lab on the fourth floor of the Department of Industrial Works when the fire broke out at midday. It is thought to have been caused by a short circuit.

Phasu Loharnchun, director-general of the department, said officials attending a meeting on the fifth floor of the building left promptly, adding that nobody was hurt.


Wharf worries

Officials suspend operations

Several wharfs in Ayutthaya accused of causing pollution have been suspended from operating until they clean up their act.

Local Natural Resources and Environment Office director Surachai Ajalabun said most of the wharfs are in Nakhon Luang and Tha Rua districts. Neighbours complained the wharfs are poorly managed, cause traffic problems and create dust, bad smells and loud noise.

Wichian Phusawek, president of tambon Khlong Sakae municipality, said Nakhon Luang district has more than 40 wharfs, many of which blight the lives of locals.

Engine trouble

Bird hits passenger plane

An Air Asia passenger plane was damaged while landing at Nakhon Si Thammarat. An egret bird was sucked into one of the plane’s engines. It happened on October 16. The pilot landed the plane safely. Nobody was hurt.
