Monstrous Victorious
Independent Release
Thailand's premier underground hardcore rock band Degaruda are back with their new album, Monstrous Victorious, the follow-up to their highly-acclaimed self-titled debut which came out in 2014. Once again, the band — singer-guitarists Top and Dino Tarasin, drummer Itiporn Lakarnchua and new bassist Chinnawat Chutimachalothorn — has managed to capture the energy and excitement of their live performances on their recordings.
The new album hits hard with the opening track "No One's Home," a song full of the screamed melodic vocals, hard-hitting drums and heavy harmonising guitars that Degaruda's fans know and love. The following track, "The Thing," rocks just as hard while introducing the more experimental aspect of the band's sound with slightly discordant riffs, unusual harmonies and a psychedelic instrumental break.
That psychedelic mood returns on the short instrumental tracks "Selene" and "Helios," while the tracks in between mix complex hard-rock riffing with quiet melodic guitar passages and even hints of reggae. Album closer "Tusk" ends the record on a high note with a solid slice of melodic heavy rock.
As with their first album, Monstrous Victorious comes with stunningly intricate artwork by band member Top. The artwork goes well with the music, which is complex and full of imagination with well thought-out ideas and great playing. Best of all, it rocks hard and is great fun to listen to. — BE
