Great story game for 3DS owners
I'm a fan of role playing games (from now on I'll call this genre RPG games), which are games that you act as the main protagonist and, along the way, develop friendship with friends while saving the world or helping other people until the story unfolds. It's like reading a novel, an interactive one that you get to choose what to do and interact with things.
Anyway, currently, there are very few full-fledge RPG games for Nintendo 3DS and this game is one of this rare breed.
Tales series has been around for quite a while, since 1994, and has been a cult hit alongside Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series since then.
Tales of the abyss was originally released on Playstation 2 console in 2005 and now it was port on to Nintendo's latest portable console, the 3DS. But not much has been added on top of the original apart from the crappy 3D effect.
Fortunately, the story and game play in this game is top-notch.
It's a fantasy story of a world that is different from ours and the land that people are living on was lifted from the core of the planet. So, the world in this game has 2 layers: land and underground. The main protagonist, Luke Fon Fabre, is a son of a duke who lost his memory and was locked in his own home for some particular reason, which you'll learn later on when you play the game. Not long after the game starts you'll snatched out of your home by mysterious force and then, somehow, dragged in to a war between yours and another. Being arrogant and cocky and having extremely powerful hidden power, you did many things that cause harm and havoc to others and the world. But, in the end, you choose to repent your crimes by helping to stop the war and prevent the world from collapsing.
The game play is pretty much like most traditional RPG games that you'll be running around the field and towns, talking to people, solving predicaments, fighting monsters which developing your equipment, abilities and stats. Even though fighting monsters is fun and hectic with plenty of power for you to unleash, it can get quite repetitive and unchallenging, mostly because the monsters you fought has nothing much for you to remember or poses much of a threat (not even bosses, I dare say), unlike Dragon Quest cute and authentic but deadly monsters.
The graphics in this game is exactly like it's Playstation 2 version, which is quite good but nothing to compare to recent 3DS games like Kid Icarus or Resident Evil.
Music is pleasant but nothing of note. Luckily, it won't bother you.
The best part of this game is the lengthy and interesting story with plenty of twists and funny lines which you'll be reading and listening through for at least 40 hours to get through to the ending. As I RPG lover myself, I played this for about 60 hours with enjoyment, just like reading a good novel.
RPG lovers must play this.
