Oscar selfie sets twitter world record
How do you set the world record for the highest number of retweets for a twitter message?
First, you probably need to be famous. Second, you'll probably need to include a photo with a lot of famous friends. Oh yes, it helps if you are hosting a television show seen by a world-wide audience, you have 27 million twitter followers and you encourage them to retweet your photo.
That is the formula Academy Awards host Ellen DeGeneres used yesterday. First she decided to take a selfie with award-winning actress Meryl Streep and then she started calling on other stars to join them – Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Bradley Cooper, Kevin Spacy, Jered Leto, Channing Tatum, Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong'o and her younger brother Junior.
She handed Bradley Cooper her smartphone and he took what is now the world's most retweeted twitter message.
As of this morning, it had been retweeted 2.9 million times, easily surpassing the previous record held by President Barack Obama whose post-election post in 2012 garnered a mere 800,000 retweets.
Incidentally, "If only Bradley's arm was longer," refers to the fact that there were more stars in the group, but they couldn't all fit in the photo.
