CHATROOM Photographs courtesy of Bangkok Post Letter of The Week ENGLISH EXCITEMENTHello Editor. My name is Arpapich Boonnithi and I study at Samsen Witthayalai School. From September 21-23, 2004, I went to an English Enrichment Camp at Hua Hin with my Matayom 1 class and my teachers. We stayed at Milford Paradise Hua Hin Hotel. We went bungee jumping, to the Golden Teak Palace, the Wana Utayan Pranburi, Khao Sam Roi Yod National Park and some mangrove forests. At camp, we had to speak English all the time, which I think was very good because it gave me lots of practice. All the activities at camp were very interesting and fun, such as singing, games, a talent show, nature walks and beach sports. Moreover, the food at the camp was very delicious. Im really looking forward to going to this English camp again. It was a memorable experience. Arpapich Boonnithi, Bangkok Hello Arpapich. Well, total immersion in a subject is certainly the best way to learn a language. That is, if you have to speak it all the time, you have no option but to use if and learn it unless you want to remain silent, of course. I must say, I had some bad luck when I went to Hua Hin for my three-day annual leave last year as it rained every single day (except on the way home). Editor GRAMMAR WOESDear Editor. My name is Richai Nathakunchorn, Im 14 years old and this is my first letter to Student Weekly. Im very excited because English is very difficult for me. I have studied the subject for 11 years since I was in kindergarten, in fact. Im good at vocabulary (that is, I know a lot of words) but Im really bad at grammar. When I write any essays or long stories in English, I always use incorrect grammar. I read many books about grammar, and I study hard and always practice English with my teachers, but my grades havent improved. What should I do? Richai Nathakunchorn Well, Richai, although we try to take away emphasis on heavy grammar theory in Student Weekly, it is important in examinations and in formal situations. Have you tried our University Tips section? You may think thats a little old for you, but it takes grammar and tries to make it interesting and relevant. The other thing is not to read too many theory books on grammar, but to look at real-life examples and try to work out the structure, tenses, subjects, verbs, nouns and so on. If you enjoy it, its so much easier to learn. Editor CURRY FURYIn 1994, when I was 7 years old, I went on a road trip to Malaysia with my family. The trip started in Padan Besar, Songkhla. We used the A2 Highway, which joins the Butterworth train line. After we passed the border, we noticed that the road in Malaysia was very clean. We had lunch in a revolving restaurant at the top of Penangs tallest building. It was my first meal containing so much curry and dinner that night was also heavily flavoured with curry. The meals were delicious, but I felt strange after eating so much curry all day. The next day, we left Penang and headed for our destination: the Genting Highland Resort just outside of Kuala Lumpur. Our lunch that day was curry fried rice with goat butter! Curry with every meal, and now goat butter! Someone was trying to get me to go on a diet, right? I had a good time at the resort, enjoying as many of the facilities as I could before I went to bed that night. The next morning, I went to the restaurant for breakfast but Yes, you guessed it, more curry! After I got back to Thailand, I had a new appreciation for the spicy Thai food that I love so much. Worapong Wilairat, Bangkok Strange but true fact, Worapong: Chicken curry is the most popular dish in the UK. I do love spicy food, which is kind of lucky living in Thailand, but too much of anything becomes boring after a while. Also, did you know that really spicy foods help you lose weight because they speed up your metabolism? Editor LOVE LESSONWhen I was in high school, I had a good friend: a pretty and self-confident girl. I first met her in grade 8, but we didnt become close until two years later. Our relationship developed and became closer with each passing day. We sat together in every class and she became a very important person in my life. In our 12th grade, my friend became an exchange student. When she went abroad that year, I was extremely sad. Although the weather was clear and fine, I was blue. I didnt speak to anyone for days and didnt feel like doing anything. I wanted to tell my friend that I loved her very much, but it was too late. Now our relationship is not the same and I seldom talk to her. I dont know why this happened. This experience has taught me that if I have something that I want to do, I need to do it before its too late. Surapun Prasit, Chonburi A valuable lesson, Surapun. Dont waste time if theres something you want to do, just do it! And thats not just true of relationships, but of everything. As far as we know, you only get one chance in life and its too short to squander. Editor CALLING SIRIWAN RAKKASETKAM!Siriwan or anyone that knows her please get in touch.
