Drama/Action: ALEXANDER (November 24, 2004) Alexander (starring Colin Farrell) is an epic story that is as daring, bold and ambitious as its subject (says the production notes), a relentless conqueror who by the age of 32 had amassed the greatest empire the world had ever seen. Past and present collide to form a tapestry of triumphs and tragedies in which childhood memories and Alexanders rise to power unfold side by side with the latter day expansion of his empire, its gradual decline and ultimate downfall. If youre a regular reader of our Gossip page, youll remember that the movie was partly filmed in Thailand and Farrell astonished locals with his standard behaviour of swearing, drinking, fighting and falling over, not necessarily in that order.

Thriller/Mystery: THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (November 25, 2004) Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep star in this re-make of a 1960s classic. As the US watches a presidential campaign hurtle towards election day, one soldier races to uncover the conspiracy behind it. Army Major Bennett Marco (Washington) cant sleep at night, and he doesnt want to. Marco spends his days giving speeches about his platoons ambush in the Kuwaiti desert and the heroics of Sergeant Raymond Shaw. But at night, Marcos dreamlike memories of the desert turn sinister and terrifying, and he wonders whether the two soldiers who died in the firefight might have met darker fates than officially recorded and whether Shaw might not be the glorious hero that everyone thinks he is. Great reviews, but dont expect a lighthearted romp.

Newly released VCDs/DVDs

Action: KILL BILL 2:  -- Given that Kill Bill was originally filmed as one movie then split into two, its possibly surprising that Volume 2 stands out on its own as a cinematic masterpiece. But with a stylish intro from The Bride and enough story in-filling to give you some background to this tale of bloody revenge, Volume 2 is not to be missed. Quiet and moody where Volume 1 was loud and brash, the film leads us to the climax we all know is coming via The Brides wedding party, her tuition at the hands (literally) of an ageless Kung Fu master and several messy deaths. Dont miss it.
