Encroached land to be reclaimed
Military officers have been told to assist wildlife officials in a new operation to reclaim more than 600,000 rai of encroached forests countrywide.
Natural Resources and Environment Minister Dapong Ratanasuwan said on May 22 that the crackdown needs help from soldiers because state agencies overseeing the forests are understaffed and their officials feel more secure with military assistance.
The operation will be carried out in the second half of this year, officials said.

Bomb hoax delays flight
A bomb hoax by a passenger delayed Thai Air Asia flight FD3002 from Phuket to Don Mueang airport for about two hours on the morning on May 22.
According to the airline, a passenger checking in at Phuket airport told luggage X-ray staff that there was a bomb, prompting staff to perform thorough safety checks.
The flight went ahead as scheduled after no threat was found. The passenger who made the hoax and a travel companion were prohibited from boarding the flight.

Man crushed in elevator
A 54-year-old Swiss man was killed in a hotel lift. He was crushed to death when the lift malfunctioned. It happened at the Baan Paradise Hotel in Phuket. The man had fallen into the gap between the doors and lift shaft.
