Did you know

PewDiePie had the most YouTube subscribers in 2013.

Photography — the art of capturing light — has become a hobby most people are familiar with, and these days anybody can take an ‘arty’ photo with their phone. But to be good at it, and to really make an impact or to share your feelings through a picture, takes more than one shot.

The best way to develop any artistic skill is by practicing and learning through experience. It’s also important for budding photographers to see as much good work as possible, and a festival currently being held in Bangkok is the best place to start.

Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), along with well-known photographers including Ark Fongsmut, Manit Sriwanichpoom and Nikan Wasinondh, has created Photo Bangkok 2015, which is being held at BACC until October 4. This is a great opportunity for everybody to enjoy the art, absorb the message of each photograph and learn from the work on display.

PAUSE PHOTOGRAPHY

One of exhibitions in the festival, Pause, is curated by Ark Fongsmut. “Pause is a contemporary Asian photography exhibition that offers an exploration of arts, culture and artistic techniques in photography,” Ark explained.

AWARD-WINNING PHOTOBOOK

Another interesting exhibit in the festival, the German Photobook Award 2015, is a collaboration with Goethe Institute. It’s an annual showcase of award-winning photography from the German book award, displayed on the 5th floor of BACC.

INSIDE CAMERA

For those wanting to truly get inside photography, RGB is the answer. This art installation was shown at 2014’s Wonderfruit Festival and was created by Meeratchata Rujinarong and RMA Institute. It’s a room-sized camera obscura with a built-in darkroom. The purpose is to experience what it’s like to be inside a camera. Participants can also capture an image and print it instantly.

WORLD EXPERTS

Photo Bangkok 2015 will also run talks, workshops and portfolio reviews throughout the two-month exhibition, covering historical, artistic and commercial areas of photography. It has brought together the world’s renowned curators, directors, publishers and photo editors to review works by emerging artists and photographers.
