Airport package catches fire

A bag containing chemical substances intended for use in fertiliser production caught fire at Suvarnabhumi airport on January 28.

The bag’s owner, Pongkan Kositthammanant, claimed a friend had asked him to take it on a flight to Phnom Penh.

The incident happened at a Bangkok Airways check-in counter at about 6:15 am. The bag began burning when a member of the airline staff placed it on a conveyor belt. The fire was soon extinguished.

Bomb explodes at school

A bomb targeting a security team went off in front of a school in Sungai Padi district of Narathiwat on January 28.

The bomb exploded at the entrance to Ban Kawa School at about 8 am. Bomb disposal officers arrived at the scene and found the drain beneath the school’s entrance gate had been destroyed.

Police said the bomb weighed 20 kilogrammes and was triggered by a radio transmission. Nobody was hurt. Authorities believe the attack was the work of southern insurgents.

Fatal fire

Four family members killed

A fire destroyed a shophouse. It happened on January 30 in Din Daeng, Bangkok. Four family members were killed. Ten other relatives managed to escape the fire.
