Frogstomp, the 1995 debut album of Australian rock band Silverchair, has been re-released to mark its 20th anniversary. While being obscure to some people, Silverchair were not only hugely successful in their home country but also internationally where their alternative grunge style attracted many fans. The original release of Frogstomp gained a huge following and reached No. 1 on the Australian ARIA chart.

The opening song, “Israel’s Son,” is a heavy, emotional piece which sets the overall vibe of the album. Second track “Tomorrow” is a highlight, featuring a laid-back melody paired with hard rock vocals. Another big hit, “Pure Massacre,” has strong, impressive guitar lines and a driving backing track.

The album was recorded when the members of Silverchair were only 15 years old. The lyrics were created from ideas about the hardships of ordinary life and inspired by television and media. If you are in the mood to appreciate Silverchair’s carefully crafted lyrics and grunge out to the often discordant yet ultimately rocking tunes, then check out Frogstomp. — MT
