Editor's note

It seems that we've pretty much made it to the end of 2015 and more or less survived another year. This time of year always brings mixed emotions. On the one hand, it feels exciting to be about to start a new year with the prospect of new beginnings, exciting projects and unexpected adventures. On the other hand, it's scary how every year seems to pass faster than the years before and how there never seems to be enough time to do all the things that we want to do.

In terms of international events, 2015 was a pretty horrific year in a lot of ways. The past 12 months seemed to be dominated by random mass shootings, natural disasters, global political unrest and escalating wars. There were probably lots of good things that happened in the world too, but I can't really think of any right now.

For me personally, though, it wasn't such a bad year. Becoming the editor of this fine publication has been a fun and challenging learning experience, and I've managed to complete a few personal projects outside of work that I'm quite happy with.

I've never believed in New Year resolutions, except maybe to try and make each year better than the previous ones. That might be a futile and impossible task, but I still think it's worth a try. I suppose it's worth remembering that the point where it has been decided that one year will end and another will begin is pretty arbitrary and in fact differs in different places and cultures. So there's no use waiting around for a new year to start before making the changes you want to make or starting the things that you want to start. Just do it when you're ready, and the sooner the better.

Having said that, I hope everybody enjoys the upcoming New Year celebrations and that 2016 is a great year with more good stuff than bad. Happy New Year!
