Famous songwriter Cholathee Tharnthong says that one day, long ago, he was at a petrol station in the Bukkhalo area of Thon Buri.

A young car washer named Sayan Deesamer was working there and Mr Cholathee heard him humming a song.

He was instantly impressed

''The first time I heard him, I knew this kid had talent '' the songwriter recalled

Mr Cholathee asked him whether he wanted to be a singer and gave him the song "Police Chief's Daughter'' (See music video below). Sayan, who had long had a desire to be a luk thung singer, quickly accepted.

The song became a hit and, after a name change to Sayan Sanya, the car-washer turned luk thung singer became one of the country's biggest singing stars.

Sayan was born to a corn farming family on Jan 31, 1953 in Doembang Nangbuat district of the central province of Suphan Buri.

During his career he recorded more than 1,000 songs, about 300 of them written by Mr Cholathee.

In July, Sayan was admitted to hospital after suffering from symptoms of fatigue and having lost about 15 kilogrammes in weight in June.

He was diagnosed with liver cancer and, after a two-month battle with the disease, he died yesterday.
