Puppet master

While I was taking photographs of street life in Jaipur, India, somebody suddenly started talking to me from behind.

When I turned around, an obviously penniless man was standing in front of me. His sad eyes and his perfect English were in total contrast to the ragged clothes he was wearing.

His name was Bangali, and he was a puppeteer and maker of traditional Indian puppets. He invited me to his place, where he lived with his wife and three small kids. Their poverty was obvious. He told me that theres little demand for his craft these days, so its difficult for him to make a living.

It used to be different, though. Bangali proudly showed me a thick album full of newspaper clippings and snapshots from tours hed done in New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Holland and other countries.

The pictures showed a handsome, well-dressed man smiling into the camera, surrounded by friends and members of the audience. The eyes, though, were the same sad ones Id been looking into for the last half-hour or more.

Bangali (on the left in the above photo) then gave me a puppet hed made. He even put on a brief show for me with his brother (on the right).

Later I mailed Bangali some clothes and other useful items. I hope that he received them.
